What types of electric car charging stations are there?
There are three basic types of charging stations: wall outlets, specialized high-voltage stations and direct current fast charge (DCFC) stations.
level 1 charging station (Wall outlets): These are the most common type of charging station and can be found in most homes and businesses. They deliver a relatively low current and take a long time to charge a vehicle.
level 2 charging station (High-voltage stations): These charging stations can deliver higher amounts of energy, cutting charging times significantly for electric vehicles that support them. They use higher voltage than standard wall outlets and require special cables and connectors to connect to an EV.
level 3 charging station (Direct Current/Fast Charge – DCFC): This relatively new technology allows for EVs to charge their batteries in much less time than it takes at a regular charging station. DCFCs can charge an EV in as little as 30 minutes, which is much faster than the hours it takes to charge using a traditional charging station.
How much Electric Vehicle Charging Station Cost?
This is a commonly asked question we get and can be a tricky answer as there are many options and considerations but let us try to give you some insight.
The cost of installing a residential EV charging station can be quite low. The basic unit costs about $700. It is a simple box with a socket and a meter and a standard electrical outlet. The home EV charging station and the installation cost range from $1,000 to $5,000.
The biggest expense is the wiring. The electricity in the box is not much use if it can’t get back to the grid or if you can’t get it into the car because your wiring is inadequate. The cost of installing an electric vehicle charging station goes up steeply when you add in the cost of upgrading your electrical service and/or putting in new wiring. The cost for this work can be $2,000 to $10,000 depending on what you already have and how difficult it is to install the EVSE in your garage or elsewhere on your property.
The other major expense in installing an electric vehicle charging station is labor, which can vary from $1,500 to $5,000 again depending on what needs to be done before you get to the installation itself. For example, if you need new electrical service, that will add thousands of dollars to the cost because its labor intensive work which could requiring city permits and inspections along with trenching services.
If you are fortunate enough to be at the planning stage charging stations are best handled now to reduce future electrical work. If you are building a new home, repaving, remodeling commercial, or industrial property now would be the best time to plan for where we are heading with EV’s.
