Industrial and electrical duct banks can be big projects that are tricky to install, so it is highly recommended that you hire a professional to ensure the work is done correctly the first time.
What are electrical duct banks?
The short and simple answer? Electrical duct banks are protected and secured pathways created for buried electrical cables.
Duct banks can be made to carry electrical or data cables short or long distances, depending on what is required for each specific project. It may be utilized to route cables under a roadway, or more extensively route electrical power under and within hospitals or airports.
A variety of data cables and electrical cables are laid in PVC pipes, which are also called conduits. These conduits are then bundled together and placed underground inside a steel or concrete casing for protection. These are the components that make up duct banks.
Why are duct banks important?
When building large commercial or industrial buildings, electrical duct banks play a very important part of the projects underground infrastructure. As large buildings often require a substantial amount of wiring, using duct banks allows the cabling to be outside of the building, consolidated in one area, and protected from elements.
Duct banks are ideal for installing cabling or wires under roadways, parking lots large factories, train stations and more. Installing them during initial construction can make future additions or construction much easier as well.
The combination of PVC conduits and concrete helps protect wiring and cables from weather conditions, corrosion and extreme temperatures not to mention vandalism that can result in system breakage or failure.
Types of electrical duct banks
Duct banks can be created using different types of materials. The most common method is to use PVC piping with a concrete casing. Some use PVC piping and a metal casing.
The concrete casing is typically used in construction and use PVC spacers to separate the conduits inside from the concrete walls.
The metal casing is typically used when structures can’t be moved, like roadways or parking lots. These duct banks can be filled with sand to help stabilize it.
How to ensure proper electrical duct bank installation?
As any project, duct banks require specific installation in order to offer correct performance and durability for years to come. As mentioned above, the installation process can be tricky, and involves multiple steps to compete successfully.
To start, the trench and/or tunnel being used to install the underground duct banks need some special preparation to be able to provide the required support.
Next the conduits need to be properly aligned and joints fused together. After that has been completed reinforced concrete or steel is then placed. Once all of this is done, with no leaks of concrete, the wire cabling can be installed.
To install the wiring/cabling our team uses guide wires inside the duct bank, where we are able to pull/lay wiring inside the conduits.
